THE PERSON BEHIND THE LENS

Kia ora,
I’m Tāmati.

I’m a Māori photographer based in Ruakākā, Te Tai Tokerau. My roots are in Te Hāpua in the Far North, with whakapapa connections to Whangārei and Waikato.

I’ve been a photographer for 24 years, first learning my craft on film before transitioning to digital. It started as a way to tell stories and stay involved with sport after “retiring” from playing. I still love to play—just for fun these days.

That interest in storytelling has taken my photography beyond the sidelines. My work spans people, food, products, landscapes and everyday life. Whether I’m photographing a game, working on a product shoot or exploring the coast, I’m looking for the details and moments that make a photograph worth spending time with.

Papua New Guinea holds a personal place in my work. My wife, Rebekah, is from Misima Island, and our whānau and agricultural connections are part of the story behind that collection.

Outside photography, I’m a husband, dad and business owner, working across food and renewable ocean energy. Whānau, faith and building something worthwhile are central to who I am. Away from work, I enjoy training, paddling waka ama and spending time at the beach.

This is a place to share my photographs and the stories behind them.

Through the lens. Painting with light.
